Never Scrub Your Grout Again! Request This Type of Easy to Clean, Stain Resistant Grout— BYHYU 0613/15/2017 Hey BYHYU. Welcome to episode 61 Build House Yourself University. I’m Michelle Nelson, your host and fellow student, and together we’ll learn the basics of home design and construction and demystify the building process, so we can build quality dream homes, with or without a general contractor. This week's episode will be a quick tip, instead of a mini lesson. Let’s get right to it. One of my least favorite household chores is cleaning grout :-/ But, I recently learned about a type of grout that stays beautiful and virtually stain free for years. You heard me right… years. It’s epoxy grout. Epoxy grout is made from epoxy resins and a filler powder. That makes the grout extremely hard, durable, and nearly stain proof. It also makes the bond between tiles very strong. Epoxy grout can be used on all tile surfaces including floors, countertops and showers. Epoxy grout doesn't stain, doesn't need sealing and isn't porous, so doesn't discolor when wet and there is almost no maintenance needed. So, you might be wondering why epoxy grout isn’t used all the time. Here's why... 1. It’s about 3-5 times as expensive as regular cement grout. But for me, that extra expense is worth not having to scrub my grout with a toothbrush. 2. Epoxy grout has a more plasticy look than regular grout. Some people dislike that. But the way I figure it is, caulk looks pretty plasticy and that doesn’t bother me. Plus, you can request super thin grout lines. To be sure you'll like the look, test a sample of the epoxy grout to see how you like it. 3. Not all tile installers can work with epoxy grout. Your tile installer needs to have experience with epoxy grout since it is more difficult to work with than regular cement grout. Regular cement grout is very easy to spread, shape and work with. Without experience, it’s harder to manipulate epoxy grout. Epoxy grout also takes a little longer to set up in the grout joints and it takes days to cure. The epoxy grout that I’m talking about here is a "100% solids" epoxy grout. Don’t confuse it with epoxy emulsion grouts which are a mixture of cement and epoxy resins. Epoxy emulsion grouts are not stain proof and they will absorb liquids and stains. What you want is epoxy grout. The most recommended brand that I found in my research is by a company named Laticrete (lay-da-creet). So, our quick tip for this week is to use epoxy grout to easy to clean, stain resistant grout.
